Where scholars disagree

Some halal questions do not have one answer. On these 4 entries, named certifiers and schools take conflicting positions — the honest move is to show you all of them.

Carmine (cochineal)

A red dye crushed from cochineal insects. The majority of scholars and most certifiers rule it haram; a minority permit it. This is a genuine disagreement, not a settled matter.

Ethanol in flavourings

Most 'natural flavour' on a label is a compound dissolved in ethanol. Whether trace carrier alcohol is acceptable is a threshold question — and the named thresholds disagree with each other by a factor of five.

Shellac

The shine on chocolate raisins, jelly beans and coated tablets comes from a resin secreted by the lac insect. Whether that makes it haram is a live disagreement between certifiers — we show each position.

Vanilla extract

Real vanilla extract is vanilla beans steeped in alcohol and water. Whether that alcohol carrier matters is one of the most genuinely contested questions in applied halal food rulings.
